Title: Technology and the Ear Nose and Throat Surgeon: a match made in heaven 

Abstract:  

The breadth of Ear, Nose and Throat disorders is vast. The specialty includes some of the most complex diagnostic, anatomical, physiological and pathological problems. Finding solutions to many of these issues has only been possible with a successful marriage between scientists and doctors. Problems have been overcome with technological advancements in endoscopy, lasers, implantation science, computer science, energy devices and biomaterials. Challenges remain, and we now, more than ever, look towards developments science and technology to overcome these hurdles. 

In this talk, I will describe the nature of the specialty, give examples of successful technological solutions of the past and outline some current challenges that we face.

Mr. Nimesh Patel is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons and lead clinician in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery, UHS. He is the Associate Medical Director of the Lymington New Forest Hospital. Mr Patel’s research interests revolve around bringing technology into clinical practice.
